9/11

I don't get it.  Maybe it's because I am not a parent, but I've thought it was odd in the 6 years I've been here that there is no mention of 9/11.  No moment of silence.  Nothing.  Today I discovered it's because no one knows about it.  Parents aren't telling kids and we're not teaching it.

I once worked in a district that on every anniversary had a moment of silence.  Here, nothing.

When should we teach children, not about terrorism but heroes?  Those who gave their life to help others.  When should we teach them about not being afraid, but about how this country pulled together in the days and weeks following the attack?  When is it appropriate?
